IN PRAISE OF LOVE Valentine’s Day! What a great day to celebrate God’s unchanging, everlasting love. The staff of Shiphrah and the little children’s home experienced great heaping measures of tangible love at a staff retreat held at beautiful Maryhill Retreat Center high on a hill overlooking Manila. “When you see the hills, you’ll know you’re home.” The Sweetgrass Hills, Liberty County, Montana Our eyes scan the northern horizon. There they are! The first glimpse! Dorothy said it in Wizard of Oz. “Oh, Auntie Em….there’s no place like home!” Sacred to the Blackfeet Indians, always beautiful, the Hi lls are home for us. This year they were exceptional. The spring rains had been more than generous and the Hills were lushly green like they hadn’t been for years. Our family farm was just to the east of them, some of the land touching the foothills. “We lift our eyes up to the hills. From whence does our help come? Our help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.”Ps. 121 A Washlady’s Hands Tita Ching was our lavandera (laundry lady) for perhaps five or six years in the middle of the 1990’s. She died a week ago of esophageal cancer. She was barely 60. Many of her grandchildren had been born either in our home or at Shiphrah Birthing Home. Standing at her coffin I was struck by her hands. Her hands told the story of her life. |
